Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) Safety
Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) can provide temporary elevated workspaces as an alternative to ladders or scaffolding. Due to the potential hazards of working at height, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) have developed standards related to MEWP design, construction, and use. This course covers the 2018 ANSI A92 and CSA B354 standards for MEWP operators and occupants. It covers MEWP Group and Type designations, as well as MEWP design, use, and training requirements.

What is the difference between an MEWP operator and an MEWP occupant?
An operator is qualified to control the movements of an MEWP, while an occupant is anyone present on a platform.
What is the difference between Group A and Group B MEWPs?
They both have platforms that move up and down, but only Group B MEWPs are designed to extend beyond the tipping line.
What must be included in an MEWP rescue plan?
The rescue plan must address the steps to be taken after a fall, if the platform becomes entangled, or if the machine fails.
Who is responsible for training MEWP occupants?
MEWP users (owners and renters) must ensure that all occupants are properly trained by a qualified MEWP operator.
Is the operator the only one who knows how to use the MEWP controls?

Document and recordkeeping requirements include: Operating manuals from the manufacturer must be provided upon sale, rental, or lease, and be stored in a weather-proof compartment on the MEWP. The user must ensure the operator has read and understands the manuals, or has had it explained to them. Signs or labels must be posted on the equipment to clearly indicate hazards, such as machine-related physical hazards, platform load limits, indoor use only with zero exposure to wind (if applicable), and the maximum wind rating for MEWPs designed for outdoor use. The date of the last annual inspection must be indicated on the machine.
